The Major in Communication with a Concentration in Organizational Communication is an interdisciplinary major housed in the D’Amour School of Arts and Sciences, department of English, and in the Grenon School of Business, department of Marketing and Organizational Communication. It is designed with a core program to introduce students to the field of Communication, followed by the concentration in Organizational Communication, and ending with a 2-course Communication Capstone sequence.
Communication is at the heart of nearly every profession. A Communication major equips students with skills like public speaking, writing, interpersonal communication, and digital literacy, which are essential in a wide range of industries. Communication studies emphasize the analysis of messages, audiences, and contexts. Students learn to think critically about how information is conveyed, received, and interpreted, which is valuable in a world of increasing information overload and media complexity.
The concentration in Organizational Communication on the study of communication within organizations, including how information is exchanged between individuals, teams, and departments. It emphasizes both internal communication (e.g., between employees or within a company) and external communication (e.g., with customers, stakeholders, and the public). Courses focus on practical, real-world communication challenges that organizations face. By improving communication efficiency and effectiveness, graduates can help organizations reduce misunderstandings, increase productivity, and foster a positive work environment. Effective organizational communication is key to the success of any company, and these skills are highly sought after in industries ranging from business to non-profit sectors.
