Minor in Community-Engaged Learning (CEL)

The CEL Minor consists of six (6) elective courses that have been approved by the CEL director, including a capstone independent study course (IDS 425). CEL students also must complete 100 hours of service during their time at Assumption. The heart of the minor is the taking of CEL courses in at least three different disciplines. The sixth course, IDS 425, the CEL Minor capstone independent study – also requires community engagement volunteer hours.

One (1) Theology class (THE 100 Introduction to Theology)

Four (4) Elective courses that address social issues in relation to the common good. At least three (3) of these courses must have a CEL designation. All four (4) classes must be approved by the CEL director.

IDS 425 – CEL Minor Capstone Independent Study – may be replaced with a major capstone course with approval from the CEL director.

CEL Course Options Across the Curriculum

Faculty across departments and schools are always developing new CEL courses. Students should consult with their advisor or the CEL director for CEL course offerings available each semester. Look for the CEL designation. Students should always feel free to ask the CEL director if a course counts towards the minor.

Service Hours

CEL minors must accumulate 100 hours of unpaid community service and engagement while enrolled at Assumption, including winter and summer breaks. Students often earn most of these hours through the CEL courses themselves, but the minor also requires at least some hours to be fulfilled through some other form of volunteer work, usually either by participating locally through the Reach Out Center, going on a Campus Ministry SEND trip, or doing an unpaid internship, or a practicum.

Sample CSL Courses

Often a single academic course will be offered in a CSL format one semester, but not the next. Thus the list of CSL courses is always changing – and growing. When registering in a particular semester, look for the CSL designation. Past CSL courses include:
