This course examines the history of the family in the U.S. and how its form and roles have changed across time. Emphasis will be placed on the diverse ways in which families are defined and formed, as well as how particular families’ abilities to function in society are impacted by how the family is defined at social, cultural, and institutional levels. Specific topics will include mate selection, sexuality, marriage and cohabitation, blended families, work and family life, divorce, and childbearing and childrearing.
