Dean's List
Undergraduate students whose semester GPA is 3.50 or higher qualifies for Dean’s List if they carried at least five courses, earning at least 15 credits. Students who carried at least four courses, earning at least 12 credits, and whose semester GPA is 3.50 or higher are permitted one semester on Dean’s List. The list is published at the end of each semester.
Students who earn Dean’s List after the fall semester are permitted a free sixth course in the spring semester. Students who earn Dean's List after the spring semester are permitted a free sixth course over the summer or in the fall, but not both. The Dean's List credit does not apply to Intersession, nor does it apply to students who have graduated from the University. During add/drop, students must contact the Office of the Registrar to be registered for the sixth course. Students who study abroad in the semester subsequent to their Dean’s Listing may request a free sixth course for the following fall or spring semester, only. Students are responsible for any special, non-tuition fees associated with a Dean’s List free course, such as a lab fee or studio art fee.
Graduation Honors
Graduation honors are awarded based on graded courses completed at Assumption University or through the Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts (HECCMA).
A bachelor's degree is conferred with the following honors based on the student's cumulative GPA:
- Cum laude — 3.50–3.74
- Magna cum laude — 3.75–3.89
- Summa cum laude — 3.90 or higher
Part-time matriculated students are eligible for graduation honors under the same standards as full-time matriculated students.
Transfer students may qualify for graduation honors if they meet the applicable cumulative GPA standard based on a minimum of nineteen (19) courses completed at Assumption University or through HECCMA.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Each spring, the valedictorian and salutatorian are chosen from graduating students who fulfill the criteria for a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree and who are ranked in the top ten students of their class, ties for tenth place inclusive. The selection committee consists of the Senior Class President and Vice President, the Chairperson(s) of the Commencement Committee, and those elected representatives of the Representative Faculty Senate who serve on the Commencement Committee. The committee reviews academic records and contributions to the community and interviews candidates in order to select worthy recipients of the University’s highest graduation honors.
Participation in Commencement
Degree candidates who are within two courses, not to exceed six (6) credits, of completing their degree requirements at the conclusion of the spring semester may petition to participate in Commencement as degree-in-progress candidates, subject to the following requirements:
- The student must submit a petition provided by the Registrar's Office identifying the outstanding degree requirements and providing a plan for completing the remaining coursework, preferably during the subsequent summer term.
- At the time of petition, the student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 and a minimum GPA of 2.00 in the major.
- The petition will be reviewed and the student will be notified.
Students who are required to withdraw from the University following the fall semester of their senior year are not eligible to participate in Commencement. Students who are deficient in credits as a result of a violation of the University's academic integrity policy during their final semester are also ineligible.
Students approved to participate in Commencement as degree-in-progress candidates will participate in the ceremony, including robing and walking across the stage, but they will not receive a diploma; they will receive a diploma case, which will indicate that the student's degree is in progress. The student's name will be identified as "Degree in Progress" in the Commencement program.
Students who are missing two laboratory science courses totaling eight (8) credits may petition to participate in Commencement as degree-in-progress candidates.
